HASTINGS, Neb. - An NAIA Top-20 showdown went No. 18 Hastings's way in a 5-1 win over No. 11 Grace on Saturday.
The Broncos (5-1-1) outshot Grace 21-6 in the match, forcing Grace goalkeeper Abby Schue into 10 saves on the day.
Hastings needed just five shots to score its first two goals. The Broncos used two crosses to head in two goals and shock the Lady Lancers (1-4-1). The hosts tacked on a third goal a few minutes before halftime to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the midway break.
Grace could only try two shots in the first half in response, including an attempt by Kristen Bellinger and one from Allison Vroon.
Hastings would go on to net two more goals in a two-minute span in the second half.
Grace's lone goal came in rapid succession to the Broncos' fifth. McKenna Cruz sent in a long free kick behind the Broncos' backline, and Hastings headed the high ball past their own goalkeeper into the back of the net at the 70:24 mark.
The Lady Lancers outshot the Broncos over the final 20 minutes of the match, but the damage was already done.
Bellinger had two of Grace's six shots, and Liz Van Wormer had a shot on goal.
"We are our own worst enemy. For the most part we work hard, but our efficiency and effectiveness must make strides of improvement," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "We know what to do; it's simply putting it into practical application. There's a deep-seated ability in this group. When it gets unearthed, we will shred brilliantly."
The Lady Lancers will kick off the Crossroads League season next week, hosting Taylor at 7 p.m. Saturday at 1st Source Bank Field.
