Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grace’s chances go for naught in defeat

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - There were ample opportunities for Grace's men's soccer team on Wednesday night against Marian.

Despite having 1 penalty kick, 15 first-half shots and 5 corner kicks, Grace stood at the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline at 1st Source Bank Field.

The Lancers (6-2-2, 1-1 Crossroads League) outshot Marian 20-8 in the match, but a second-half goal secured the win for the Knights (5-4-1, 2-0 CL).

The match started in a torrential downpour. Grace figured out the slick surface first and went on to dominate possession and shots in the opening half.

Midway through the first half, Cody Boerema jigged past two defenders and was fouled in the penalty box. But on the ensuing penalty kick, the Lancers' shot rattled off the crossbar.

Minutes later, a well-worked attack ended at the feet of Breno Oliveira, and his 20-yard curled shot was saved.

Jon Christensen also earned a good chance at the near post, but his shot was likewise saved.

In the final seconds of the half, Grace's late push produced a chance for Mitchell Zeilenga. The senior forward's attempt was parried wide of the net as the clock expired.

The scoreboard read 0-0 at halftime despite the Lancers holding a dominant 15-2 advantage in shots. Grace also had the only two corners of the half.

The second half was more equal in shots between the two sides. The Knights held a slight 6-5 lead in shots, including the game winner.

In the 74th minute, the Knights scored the game's only goal on a quick strike. A long pass found Sterling Steadham on the right edge of the field. Steadham shook off a challenge by a Lancer defender in the box and calmly squeezed in his shot to the near post.

Try as Grace might, the hosts were unable to produce a game-tying goal in the final 15 minutes. The Knights' defense clamped down and even had a threatening look on a counter against Grace's offensive formation.

"We lost the game, and Marian deserves credit for winning it. They took advantage of their chance, and we didn't. We didn't capitalize on the opportunities we had in the first half," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "I liked the way we played in certain areas of the field, but we seemed to play without desire at times and lacked creativity on the offensive end. This game will sting, but we have to shake it off before Saturday's match."

The Lancers' offense was led by four shots apiece from Colin Cape and Boerema. Oliveira and Christensen had three shots each, and Daniel Smith and Dominic Harris each took two.

Robbie Barnhill made four saves in goal for Grace.

Next up, the Lancers will head to Taylor on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match.
