Pilots get better of Lady Lancers

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's four-game winning streak was snapped in a 3-1 defeat to Bethel on Wednesday, opening up the second half of the Crossroads League season.

The Lady Lancers (10-9, 5-5 CL) only hit at a .096 percentage as a team. The Pilots (8-13, 4-6 CL) enjoyed 11 more kills and 8 more digs than Grace at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

Grace fell into an 0-2 hole after the two sets and couldn't muster up a comeback.  Bethel claimed the first two games 25-22 and 25-21. The Pilots had 10 more kills than the Lady Lancers in the first two sets alone.

Grace's offense was particularly inept in the second set with more attacking errors (8) than kills (7).

The Lady Lancers sparked to life in the third set. Grace earned a commanding double-digit lead late in the set, but Bethel showed resilience to fight back and make the final 25-22 scoreline respectable.

The fourth set saw Bethel in front for nearly the full duration. The Pilots pounded out 16 kills on offense and held Grace to a .098 percentage to clinch the match 25-21.

"Our defense tonight was not good enough to win. We did not give our offense enough chances to score points, which hurt us," said Grace head coach Katie Van Hofwegen. "We need to be quicker on our feet against a good team like Bethel. They made us pay tonight."

Taylor Baird produced a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs, and Caylie Teel led all players with 18 digs.

Savannah Hart was a bright spot offensively, hitting for seven kills on just 11 attempts. Sierra Smith also had 11 kills on a .250 percentage, and Marta Bleed notched nine kills on a .200 percentage.

Kaitlin Kerrigan notched 14 digs defensively, and Kelsee Zuidema aced three times.

The Lady Lancers end the week on Friday evening with a neutral-site match against Stephens in Indianapolis.
