MCKENZIE, Tenn. - Despite firing off 27 shots on Saturday, Grace's women's soccer team was unable to score and had to settle for a scoreless draw at Bethel (Tenn.).
The Lady Lancers outshot the Wildcats in every period, including blanking Bethel in shots in both overtime sessions. But the 0-0 scoreline stood for the duration of the 110 minutes.
Grace nearly scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute when Meredith Hollar's attempt clanged off the goalpost.
The first half began strongly for Grace's offense as eight of the team's nine shots came in the first 21 minutes.
The second half saw a continued assault at the Wildcats' goal. Grace fired off 14 shots in the second half, forcing Bethel into making four saves. The Lady Lancers were also called offside five times in the half.
Offensive opportunities continued for Grace in the overtime periods as the Wildcats were outshot 4-0 in the two sessions, but ultimately Bethel's goal remained unscathed.
Abby Schue was credited with eight saves in 110 minutes. As a team, Grace outshot Bethel 27-15.
Hollar led all players with five shots, and Kristen Bellinger shot four times. Kaitlyn Hayes and Sabina Meyers took three shots, and Maile Grout, Corinne Villalobos and Joana Schimmel each had two.
The Lady Lancers will enjoy their first home match of the season on Saturday, hosting Missouri Baptist at the newly renamed 1st Source Bank Field.
