GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace's women's basketball team was outscored by 13 in the second half of a 72-60 loss at Goshen on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (12-12, 7-5 Crossroads League) are now tied with the Maple Leafs (13-11, 7-5 CL) for third place in the league standings.
The first quarter was one of highs and lows for Grace. Goshen started the game on a hot streak, outscoring Grace 17-6 midway through the quarter. Grace committed six turnovers before five minutes had expired in the game.
The rest of the first quarter belonged to Grace. The Lady Lancers ended the period with 10 unanswered points, including 3-pointers from Kelsie Peterson and Hannah Adams. Goshen only led by one 19-18 at period's end.
In the second quarter, Goshen opened up a 26-18 lead only to see it erased by halftime. Peterson and Darian Patton sparked Grace in the period, combining for 10 points in the last 4:35. Patton's 3-pointer as time expired lifted the Lady Lancers to a 30-29 halftime advantage.
The Maple Leafs wasted little time opening up a lead in the third quarter. Goshen held Grace to five points over the first five minutes of the quarter, seizing an 11-point lead as a result.
But Grace refused to go down without a fight. The Lady Lancers battled back in the fourth quarter, eventually cutting Goshen's margin down to four after a basket from Haley Richardson with 2:03 remaining.
On Goshen's next possession, the Maple Leafs misfired on a shot only to score on an offensive rebound. After Grace missed a 3-pointer on the next play, the Lady Lancers were forced to foul.
The Maple Leafs went on to secure the victory by hitting 9-of-10 from the foul line in the last minute of action.
Patton scored a team-high 13 points with five rebounds and three assists, and Richardson added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Peterson produced 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, and Vironnica Drake tallied 9 points, 3 assists and 5 steals. Lauren Godfrey and Chloe Pridgen combined for 15 points off the bench, the only points scored by Grace's subs.
For the game, Grace shot 37 percent from the floor compared to 44 percent for Goshen. The Maple Leafs also made 57 percent from beyond the arc versus 32 percent for Grace.
The Lady Lancers are at home on Wednesday against Huntington at 7 p.m.
