WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's basketball team picked up its first Crossroads League win of the season with a dramatic 87-79 come-from-behind victory over Goshen on Saturday.
Goshen seemed poised at times in the first half to run away with the game. But Grace patiently built a comeback and converted late in the contest to take down the Maple Leafs (9-9, 1-5 CL).
The Lancers (9-9, 1-5 CL) outscored Goshen 49-33 in the second half thanks to stellar low post play and timely shooting.
Grace trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half in an up-and-down performance. Although the Lancers struck first with a 3-pointer from Braxton Linville on the opening possession, the Maple Leafs owned much of the first half.
The Lancers had trouble slowing down Goshen's attack in the early stages and quickly fell behind by double digits. Just over 10 minutes into the first half, Grace trailed by 16 at 31-15.
Grace began to solve Goshen's zone defense midway into the half, and momentum gradually shifted the Lancers' way.
Erik Bowen and Logan Godfrey, who terrorized Goshen's paint for much of the day, muscled Grace back into the game to end the half. The duo combined to score 17 of the team's final 21 points of the half.
As a result, Grace used a 14-2 run to chop the Maple Leafs' lead down to three with less than a minute to play. Goshen increased its cushion to eight with two free throws and a last-second 3-pointer to take a 46-38 lead at halftime.
The Maple Leafs briefly restored a double figures lead in the second half, pulling ahead 55-44 with 15:28 to play. But Grace used another 14-2 run to charge into the lead, this time sparked from the outside.
Stephen Halstead, who had been battling sickness, blitzed Goshen for a trio of 3-pointers in the span of 2:17. His final two 3s came on back-to-back possessions, lifting the Lancers to a 58-57 lead and forcing a timeout from Goshen.
The teams traded baskets for the next several nervy minutes, and Grace continued to hold a slight lead. Halstead buried another triple — his fourth of the half — to put the Lancers ahead 77-72 with 2:32 remaining.
The final two minutes were well executed by Grace. The Lancers made their free throws, including 8-of-9 down the stretch, and used an acrobatic shot from Linville to ice the win.
Bowen led Grace with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go along with five rebounds. Godfrey had the game's only double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, hitting 7-of-10 from the floor.Â
Bowen and Godfrey helped Grace outscore Goshen 44-26 in the paint. The Lancers also held a plus-7 advantage in rebounding with 11 offensive boards.
Halstead scored 16 points in 17 minutes, and Tre Olive tallied 10 points, 5 boards and 4 assists.
Linville finished with 7 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, and Chad Hoffer chipped in five points and four assists.
The Lancers will remain home on Tuesday for a matchup with Marian at 7 p.m.
