MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Grace's women's soccer team fought back from a second-half deficit to force a 1-1 draw at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (6-7-4, 3-4-1 Crossroads League) used a second-half goal from Liz Van Wormer to tie MVNU after two overtimes.
Grace currently sits in seventh place in the league standings with one regular season match remaining. The Lady Lancers can move up a few spots with a win at home against Goshen on Saturday at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
"The women played well today. They brought calm and composure in stretches, and they did little things to make us better," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "The PK given against us was difficult to accept, but I'm glad we built a section of game to score in the run of play. We are happy to gain a point on the road."
The match was statistically even. While the Cougars (9-5-2, 3-3-2 CL) had a slight 16-14 shot advantage, Grace had better looks. The Lady Lancers had eight shots on goal and scored the only goal in the run of play.
Neither side could produce a goal in the first half with Grace firing seven shots in the period.
MVNU stunned Grace with a penalty kick less than two minutes into the second half, converting to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lancers did not fade, however. Van Wormer found her game-tying goal in the 66th minute on a chilly evening for the final 1-1 scoreline.
Shots were few and far between in the overtime periods as the teams settled for a draw.
Jenni Phillips led Grace with three shots, and Sabina Meyers, Kristen Bellinger and Van Wormer each had two shots.
