FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Grace's softball team lost twice to St. Francis on Friday.
The Cougars won game one 6-2. The second game was closer with St. Francis still winning 5-3.
In the opener, Grace actually led 2-0 for most of the contest. The Lady Lancers used back-to-back sacrifice fly balls from Clarissa Knight and Chandler Elliott to bring in Hannah Herbster and Abby Mozingo in the top of the first inning.
The Cougars eventually got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with four runs to take the lead; USF added two more insurance runs in the sixth. Grace had chances to score in several innings, leaving multiple runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings.
Erin Lawhon pitched the full game, allowing two runs with nine hits from the mound. Herbster tallied two of Grace's three hits.
In the second game, Grace was again plagued by missed opportunities. The Lady Lancers stranded nine baserunners in the game, including at least one runner in every inning but one.
Grace did come up with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Emily Bobb, Herbster and Mozingo singled to load the bases. Then three straight ground balls allowed that trio to score.
The Cougars responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to regain the lead. USF added an insurance run later for the final two-run margin of victory.
Hannah England pitched five innings as the starter, allowing four runs with only one being earned. Michaela Lee finished up the game from the mound.
Mozingo went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Bobb hit 1-for-3 with a run.
The Lady Lancers will host Goshen on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Miller Athletic Complex.
