Surging Lady Lancers breeze by Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Grace College women's basketball team continued its strong play of late with an 81-69 road win at Goshen on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers (9-9, 3-3 Crossroads League) were led by the dynamic scoring of guards Vironnica Drake, Micaela Box and Brooke Sugg. The trio combined to score 51 points against the Maple Leafs (1-17, 0-6 CL).

After starting the league season 0-2, Grace has now won three of its past four league matches and sits in a three-way tie for fifth place in the standings. The Maple Leafs suffered their 12th consecutive loss.

As has been the case in several of Grace's games, the team struggled in the first quarter. Goshen used an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to pull ahead by seven, and the Maple Leafs led 20-12 at period's end.

The momentum shifted in the second quarter. The Lady Lancers went on a 9-2 run late in the quarter thanks to five points from Sugg, and Grace climbed in front 31-30 by halftime.

Sugg started the second half with a 3-pointer, and the Lady Lancers maintained a slight cushion for most of the third period.

Goshen still only trailed by two in the early minutes of the fourth quarter before Box took over. Box hit a 3-pointer and then converted an and-1 in the span of a minute, causing Goshen to call a timeout trailing by eight. A minute later Box buried another triple to put Grace on top by 11, and the Maple Leafs were forced to burn another timeout.

Grace eventually ballooned its lead up to 14 and cruised over the final minutes for the final 12-point margin of victory.

Drake led all players with 18 points, adding three steals and three rebounds in 23 minutes. Box ripped off 17 points with seven rebounds in 18 minutes as she went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and Sugg sank four 3-pointers for her 16 points.

Grace shot 48 percent from the floor as a team, including 59 percent in the second half. The Lady Lancers also held a dominant 39-27 advantage in rebounds.

Pam Miller set a career high with 16 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, to go along with eight points and five assists.

Lexi Minix was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor for eight points with three assists, and Kyannah Stull sank two triples for six points.

The Lady Lancers face one of their stiffest tests of the season on Wednesday, traveling to face two-time defending NAIA champion Marian in Indianapolis at 7 p.m.
