Lancers edge Concordia in OT
DEERFIELD, Ill. - Grace's men's basketball team remained undefeated this year courtesy of a thrilling 93-90 overtime win against Concordia on Friday night at the Trinity International Tournament.
The Lancers improved to 4-0 on the young season, led by career nights from Haden Deaton and Logan Godfrey.
Deaton poured in a career-high 32 points to lead all players. He shot 13-of-25 from the field and had six rebounds and three assists. Deaton's previous career high was 22 points.
Godfrey missed a career high in scoring by one point, finishing with 31 points on 11-of-18 from floor. He posted career-best numbers of 19 rebounds and seven assists.
Braxton Linville also tied a career-best with 13 assists on just three turnovers.
Godfrey could scarcely be contained in the first half, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lancers led the Cardinals 37-34 at the halftime break.
Deaton got off to a fast start in the second half. He scored seven points in the opening 3:09 to lift the Lancers to a nine-point edge at 47-38.
The Cardinals (1-3) refused to fade, however. Concordia rallied to take the lead with 6:17 remaining in the contest, and the Cardinals seemed poised to hold on for the win.
Concordia opened up a five-point lead after hitting a 3-pointer with 26 seconds on the clock.
Deaton then took over for the Lancers. He made a layup with 13 seconds left, and Grace quickly fouled the Cardinals.Â
Concordia missed the front-end of the bonus free throw, and the Lancers raced down the court. Linville found Deaton with an inch of free space on the left wing, and the sophomore rose up and buried the game-tying triple as time expired. That 3-pointer was Deaton's 19th point of the second half.
Grace's momentum carried into overtime. Charlie Warner opened the extra period with a 3-pointer, and Jaret Sons followed that up with another triple.Â
Godfrey converted an and-1, and Deaton took care of the rest with six points down the stretch.
Overall, 87 of Grace's 93 points came from its starting lineup. Grace outrebounded Concordia by 10 (41 to 31) and had 29 assists on 36 made field goals.
Warner finished with 13 points, and Sons scored seven.
Grace will wrap up the Trinity Tournament on Saturday, squaring off with Emmaus at 2 p.m.
