FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the Crossroads League debut for Grace's baseball team, the Lancers fell 5-0 at St. Francis.
The St. Francis series, which was originally scheduled to be Grace's home opener, was moved to Fort Wayne due to inclement weather in Winona Lake. The doubleheader on Saturday has been moved to Monday in Fort Wayne.
Grace's offense was quiet in Friday's defeat. The Lancers (0-15, 0-1 CL) were held to four hits to go along with zero walks.
The nine-inning game was a pitchers' duel for five innings. Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening five frames.
Aaron Voirol, Grace's starter on the mound, was sharp in shutting out USF for five innings. The Cougars (4-13, 1-0 CL) managed to score three runs off Voirol in the sixth inning to take the lead, and Grace never responded.
Jacob Hammel tossed a clean pair of innings in relief during the seventh and eighth to keep Grace within striking distance.
But the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth, and Grace was unable to generate a baserunner in its final at-bats.
Grace's best chance to score was the eighth inning. Mitchell Enyart was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and Ethan Brooks followed that up with a single. Enyart reached third base with two outs, but the inning ended with a ground out.
The Lancers are on the road next week. Grace plays a single game at Marian on Tuesday and a weekend series at Huntington.
