MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Grace's men's soccer team dropped a NAIA Top 25 showdown on Saturday, losing 3-2 at No. 12 Cardinal Stritch.
The 24th-ranked Lancers (5-2-1) came up short in their comeback attempt on the road. Cody Boerema and Tyler Brueckman each scored for Grace.
The Wolves (6-1) and Lancers were even for much of the first half. Cardinal Stritch held a slight 7-4 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes.
The Lancers seemed to have the upper hand offensively to end the first half, producing two corner kicks and a pair of headed efforts by Togo Narusawa and Boerema which were saved.
But CSU found the back of the net in the final minute of the first half to take a stunning 1-0 lead.
The Wolves used that momentum to score again just nine minutes into the second half, putting Grace into a 2-0 hole.
Boerema cut the Wolves' lead in half with a goal at the 62:06 mark, but Cardinal Stritch was swift in response. The Wolves scored their third goal just two minutes after Boerema's strike to increase their lead to 3-1.
The Lancers managed to get one goal back at the 88:41 mark thanks to Tyler Brueckman's first collegiate goal.
Grace was unable to find an equalizer in the final frantic minutes. The Lancers did earn a corner kick with 56 seconds to play, but Grace did not produce a shot from that opportunity.
"We played some moments of good soccer, but I never felt like we had control tonight. We were chasing the game for most of the night, and we definitely will grow through the experience," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "They are a good team with a very solid central midfield. We allowed the game to get stretched out, and we shouldn't have. We will get back up and focus on the next one."
Kurt Hamlin recorded five saves as Grace's goalkeeper, and Boerema and Narusawa each shot twice.
The Lancers will look to rebound on Friday with a home match against Manchester at 7 p.m.
