Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lancers suffer first defeat of the year

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Grace's men's basketball team was tripped up in its first trip away from home, falling to Michigan-Dearborn 69-58 on Friday.

The game was the opener of a tournament held at Rio Grande (Ohio).

The Lancers (2-1) struggled mightily with their shooting touch; Grace shot 34 percent as a team for the game. Grace made just 6-of-23 (26 percent) from the 3-point line and 10-of-19 (53 percent) from the free throw line.

The Wolverines (5-0) enjoyed a plus-14 edge in rebounding thanks to 14 offensive rebounds.

Matt Jennings made the first shot of the game, but the Lancers came up empty on their next five possessions to fall behind 9-2.

Myles Johnson came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer a few minutes later, and back-to-back scores from Charlie Warner put the Lancers back on top at 16-14.

But Grace did not taste the lead for the rest of the game. The Lancers only scored seven more points for the final 9:38 of the half, allowing Michigan-Dearborn to claim a 30-23 lead at halftime.

Johnson was Grace's leading scorer in the half with seven points.

Grace made a push early in the second half at the Wolverines' lead. Jaret Sons scored five quick points, and a 3-pointer from Haden Deaton cut the deficit to 41-37 with 14:16 remaining.

The Wolverines scored four points in response to add to their cushion, and they eventually built a double-digit lead with 7:32 left.

The Lancers cut the lead down to 10 on several occasions, but Grace could not get any closer for the rest of regulation in an 11-point loss.

Deaton led Grace in points (13) and rebounds (7), and Johnson chipped in 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Johnson shot 4-of-4 from the field, 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

Jennings had 10 points, Sons scored seven points with four rebounds, and Eddie Gill IV tallied 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

The Lancers end the tourney on Saturday against the host school Rio Grande with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
