Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sons scores 1,000th as Grace upsets Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team continued its hot start to the Crossroads League season with a marquee victory on Wednesday.

The Lancers (12-5, 4-1 CL) upended No. 9 Bethel 100-95 on the road, remaining in a tie atop the league standings.

Jaret Sons enjoyed a monster game, scoring a team-high 25 points with 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Additionally, he reached a personal milestone by becoming the newest member of Grace's 1,000-point club.

The Lancers shot 50 percent from the 3-point line and had four players score in double figures.

The game could not have started better for Grace. Haden Deaton and Sons drilled 3-pointers on the Lancers' first two possessions to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Deaton remained on fire with five more points, and Charlie Warner notched yet another trey for an early 14-2 advantage.

Bethel was forced to burn a timeout less than four minutes into the game to stop Grace's momentum.

But the Lancers' sharpshooting continued. Braxton Linville hit back-to-back triples, despite entering the game with one 3-pointer on the season.

Deaton muscled his way to another bucket, giving Grace its largest lead of the half at 30-12.

The Pilots (15-2, 3-2 CL) quickly rallied at that point, going on a 13-2 run to find life.

Bethel eventually clawed all the way back to tie the game at 35-35, and the Pilots took their first lead of the game on the next possession at 37-35 with 4:18 left in the half.

Grace went over four minutes during Bethel's run without a made field goal. The Lancers turned to the post to generate offense to end the half, using hoops from Sons and Warner to find a rhythm.

But it was the Pilots who entered halftime on top by the score of 48-46. Bethel shot 50 percent from the floor compared to 46 percent for Grace.

The Pilots committed just one turnover in the first half with Grace turning it over four times.

Deaton led all players with 12 points, and Sons and Warner each scored 10.

Similar to the first half, Grace began the second half with a dynamic attack. The Lancers scored the first eight points of the half thanks to triples from Sons and Myles Johnson.

Grace stunned the Pilots, grabbing a 60-50 lead five minutes into the second half.

The Lancers maintained a double-digit lead for the next five minutes, but Bethel again tried to rally. The Pilots trimmed Grace's cushion down to five at 70-65, but this time Grace countered.

Sons threw down a two-handed dunk and Jennings scored shortly after to make Grace's lead 77-65 with eight minutes remaining.

Bethel refused to give up and managed to cut the gap to six, but Sons rose up for another 3-pointer at the top of the key to give Grace breathing room with under three minutes to play.

The Lancers were efficient in the closing minutes, taking advantage of Bethel's frantic defense to score easy points.

Bethel tried to make the end interesting, hitting a few 3-pointers in the final minute.

But the Lancers made enough free throws down the stretch to keep Bethel at bay.

Matt Jennings poured in 19 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds in 26 minutes, and Warner finished with 19 points with four rebounds.

Deaton had 15 points, 5 boards and 3 assists, and Linville added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

Hank Smith scored seven points off the bench, and Johnson added six points and and four rebounds.

The Lancers will play their third straight ranked opponent on Saturday, traveling to No. 17 St. Francis for a 3 p.m. game. Grace is in the middle of a seven-game stretch against NAIA Top 25 teams.
