Game Recap: Softball |

Softball sinks Blue Mountain in final inning

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Grace's softball team picked up its second win of the Alabama trip on Friday, beating Blue Mountain 5-4.

Grace got the better of the Toppers (9-3) after a wild seventh inning. The final frame saw five of the nine runs scored in the game.

The game remained scoreless for the first three innings as Jeri Ellis kept Blue Mountain off the scoreboard.

In the top of the fourth, Bethany Gardner tripled with two outs, allowing Morgan Tapscott to score the first run of the game. One batter later, Kaitlyn Heffner had a single to score Gardner.

The Toppers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, and the game remained tied 2-2 entering the seventh frame.

Ellis walked to start the top of the seventh, and Britney Young and Jessica Kaurich singled on the next two at-bats as Grace led 3-2.

A ground ball from Laikyn Lowe brought in Young, and another grounder from Tapscott scored Taylor Graber.

Grace's fifth run proved to be critical. Blue Mountain needed just three batters to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, slicing the Lady Lancers' lead down to one.

Ellis returned to pitch at that point with the score 5-4. Blue Mountain had momentum with nobody out and a runner on second base, but Grace's defense won the game.

The first batter hit a pop fly for the first out. The next batter singled to right field, but right fielder Tapscott gunned down the potential tying run at home plate. The third batter grounded out to shortstop to end the Toppers' rally.

Young hit 3 for 3 with a run scored, and Ellis was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a walk. Ellis also pitched pitched four innings, allowing two runs with a strikeout.

Earlier in the day, Grace lost to No. 8 Mobile 9-1.

The Lady Lancers actually struck first against Mobile, scoring in the top of the first.

With two outs in the first, Kaurich laced a double to right field, allowing Ellis to race home.

But the Rams quickly amassed nine runs in response, ending the game after five innings due to the run-rule.

The Lady Lancers have four games remaining in Alabama. On Saturday, Grace will take on two teams (Martin Methodist, Webber International) who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25.
