WINONA LAKE, Ind. - For the second time this season, Grace's men's soccer team defeated Taylor 2-0 at 1st Source Bank Field.
The Lancers dispatched the Trojans on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament, ending Taylor's season with a pair of late goals.
Both of Grace's goals came in the final 10 minutes of action, rewarding a dominant second-half performance by the Lancers.
As a result of the win, Grace will host the semifinals of the CL Tournament on Wednesday. Grace will take on Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
Taylor began the game as the offensive aggressor. The Trojans took six shots with a corner kick over the first 20 minutes.
But Grace's defense made several stops at key moments to keep the Trojans from snagging an early lead. Matteo Conci saved a pair of shots, and Flavio Cruz kicked another attempt off the goal line.
Grace adjusted its lineup midway into the half and almost immediately changed the tone of the game.
The Lancers moved the ball consistently into Taylor's end of the field and kept the Trojans pinned back on the defensive end.
Grace's best moment came with 12 minutes remaining. Felipe Gruber, Jules Peycelon and Ze Maria Goncalves each had shots seconds apart from each other, but the Trojans' net remained unharmed.
The teams entered halftime locked in a scoreless draw. The Trojans owned a 9-7 edge in shots.
The Lancers started the second half with a much more optimistic outlook. Jonny Mora sparked Grace early with a pair of sharp runs, but the game continued to remain scoreless.
Felipe Gruber and Ethan Vigario also had two chances in the middle portions of the half. The Trojans were largely kept at bay offensively, taking just one shot over the first 35 minutes.
Grace began to apply heavy pressure with 15 minutes remaining. The Lancers had two shots from less than 10 yards away, each resulting in a sharp save by Taylor's goalkeeper. The first was a sliding effort from Jordan Jayapuram, and the second was from Martim Cardoso.
Cardoso made good on his next attempt. Jules Peycelon played a cross into a dangerous position inside the penalty box, and Cardoso beat a defender and headed the ball into the back of the net.
Mora tried to find an insurance goal late with a dazzling run in the middle of the field, but his low shot was pushed wide of the net.
The insurance goal did come with three minutes remaining in regulation. Cardoso switched a ball to the right side of the field to Daniel Santos Rosa, who laid a pass off to Jules Peycelon. Peycelon unleashed a hard, swerving shot that fooled the goalkeeper into the net for the final 2-0 scoreline.
Cardoso and Peycelon each finished the game with a goal and an assist. Grace outshot Taylor 18-10 overall in the match, including an 11-2 advantage after halftime.
Conci recorded three saves in the shutout victory. He was protected well by the backline of David Koch, Dan Allen and Flavio Cruz.
