Softball begins season in Tennessee

ONIEDA, Tenn. - After a long wait, Grace's softball team finally took the field again over the weekend.

The Lady Lancers played three games over the weekend in Tennessee, the squad's first games since March 8, 2020.

On Friday, Grace fell to Cumberlands 9-0 and Rio Grande 6-1. On Saturday, Grace tangled with No. 11 Campbellsville and lost 11-1.

Cumberlands jumped ahead in the first inning in the season opener on Friday, pushing seven runs across. home plate. Grace never recovered, being held to three hits offensively.

Alexis Bergman came in relief to pitch the final 3.1 innings, her first work at the collegiate level.

Britney Young batted 2 for 2 as Grace's best threat at the plate, and Jessica Kaurich went 1 for 2.

Young's sharp bat continued in the loss to Rio Grande. Young hit 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, driving in Emily Revercomb.

Jeri Ellis pitched six innings against the Red Storm.

Ellis and Kaurich tallied Grace's only two hits on Saturday against the No. 11-ranked Tigers. Kaurich doubled in her at-bat, driving in Young for Grace's lone run in the first inning.

Madison Bremer pitched the first few innings for Grace, and Kendra Arnold tossed the final three frames.

The Lady Lancers will start a spring break trip to Georgia beginning Feb. 26, taking on No. 21 Reinhardt, Middle Georgia State, Brenau, No. 9 Truett McConnell and No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett.
