Game Recap: Baseball |

Asbury hands Lancers pair of losses

FLORENCE, Ky. - Grace's baseball team fell twice to Asbury on Friday, losing 5-0 and 12-3.

The doubleheader capped off the season-opening series for the Lancers. The games were played at UC Health Stadium, home of the Florence Y'alls.

In the opening game, Grace was limited to three hits in the shutout.

The Eagles took the lead for good with a two-run third inning, and Asbury added insurance runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Lancers had a baserunner on third base that was stranded in the fourth inning, marking Grace's best offensive opportunity.

Alex Rich batted 2 for 3, and Patrick Danforth was 1 for 2.

Tanner Clark pitched a strong game, giving up three earned runs in 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. Nick Stoltzfus tossed the final 1.1 inning of relief.

In the second game, Grace struggled to slow down Asbury's offense. The Eagles pounced on Grace early with a three-run first inning.

The Lancers responded with two runs of their own in the third. Chris Griffin had a two-run single to right field to bring in Jaron Mullet and Alex Rich, slicing Asbury's lead to one.

But Asbury scored again, adding three more runs over the next two innings to increase the lead.

The Eagles kept the Lancers largely off the bases in the middle innings, and Asbury essentially clinched the game with an outburst in the top of the seventh.

The Eagles plated six runs, and Grace was only able to respond with one run of its own in the bottom of the seventh.

Jake Decker was Grace's most effective pitcher, throwing a scoreless inning of relief.

Mullet impressed at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance, scoring twice and stealing a base. Griffin finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs.

The Lancers' next scheduled games are against Trinity Christian on March 2 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
