SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – For the third time this season, Grace's men's soccer team played on the road at Spring Arbor.
And for the third time, the Cougars pulled out a one-goal win. The No. 11 Cougars scored with two minutes remaining in double overtime, pulling out a 2-1 victory.
The Lancers, who are receiving votes in the NAIA, outshot SAU 13-9. The advantage for Grace in shots on goal was 9-4, but the Cougars scored on two of those four shots on goal to take the victory.
SAU got on the scoreboard first midway into the opening half. The Cougars won possession near midfield and quickly struck on a direct attack through the middle of Grace's defense.
The Lancers equalized in the 34th minute. After a patient attack, Flavio Cruz found space for a long, low drive. His shot beat the goalkeeper to level the score.
The match remained even at halftime 1-1. Both sides were credited with just two shots in the half.
Neither side was able to score in the second half. Both sides had chances, including a few threatening looks in the final minutes for Grace.
The Lancers had the Cougars against the ropes in the last three minutes. Grace had a close-range header saved and a dangerous curling shot from Ulisses Miranda parried wide.
But SAU survived the late push, maintaining the 1-1 tie to send the game to extra periods.
Grace outshot SAU 4-2 in the second half with all four shots on frame.
Grace owned the majority of chances in the first overtime period, nearly winning the game. Off a corner kick, Ze Maria Goncalves fired a laser that ricocheted off the goalpost.
Two minutes later, Daigo Adachi was fouled just outside the penalty box during an advance. Jonny Mora picked out David Koch with a cross, but the Koch's header whisked wide of goal.
SAU had one chance in the final seconds, but a close header went above the crossbar.
The Cougars made good on their chance in the second OT. With 1:46 remaining, SAU scored on a diving header to claim the golden-goal victory.
Miranda and Michael Coupar had three shots with two on goal, and Cedric Brenneman added a consistent offensive threat off the bench.
The Lancers do not have another scheduled match this spring but could add more. Grace is aiming for an at-large invitation to the 2021 NAIA National Championships.
