WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Taylor on Wednesday at Coach Phil Dick Field.
The Trojans used one big inning in each game to secure the sweep, winning 7-0 and 17-1.
Grace was blanked in the first game due to the sharp pitching by Taylor's Maddi Evans. The game was close through four innings with the Trojans holding a slight 2-0 lead.
But Taylor erupted for five runs in the fifth, which proved to be the final margin of victory. The Trojans had seven hits in the frame to earn the final 7-0 scoreline.
The Lady Lancers had a baserunner in five of the seven innings, but Grace was unable to string together its hits to push across a run.
Jeri Ellis and Cassandra Hayes were each 1 for 2 in the game.
The second game had a similar storyline. Both teams scored in the first inning.
Ellis was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first, and she moved to third after a single and a sacrifice bunt. Ellis then came home to score after an RBI single from Britney Young.
The game remained 1-1 through the opening three innings. Grace had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the third when Jaden Cardoso led off the inning with a double. But the Lady Lancers were retired with three straight fly outs.
Taylor made Grace pay in a major way in the fourth inning. The Trojans erupted for 14 runs in the fourth, putting the game out of reach for Grace.
Cardoso batted 2 for 3. Elena Rolley, Ashley Beckler and Jessica Kaurich were each 1 for 2.
The Lady Lancers will hit the road on Friday at Spring Arbor. Grace's final doubleheader of the season is Saturday at home against Marian at 1 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day to honor Grace's graduating class.
