MOBILE, Ala. - Only one match now stands between Grace men's tennis team and its first national championship.
The Lancers (24-5) beat Dallas Baptist 4-0 on Thursday in the NCCAA national semifinal. Grace will aim for its place in history on Friday morning when the Lancers play Judson at 11 a.m. (Eastern) in the NCCAA national championship match.
Grace, led by head coach Andy Lewis, is playing in its first NCCAA tournament in program history.
Grace and Judson will face off for the third time this season on Friday morning. The Lancers have won both of the previous meetings, including a narrow 4-3 win during NCCAA pool play on Tuesday.
The Lancers had little trouble dispatching NCAA Div. II Dallas Baptist in the semifinals. Facundo Paredes and Ivan Antinori dominated their opponents 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Max Rozas and Mauricio Corty battled to a 7-6 win at No. 2 to grab the doubles' point for Grace.
The Patriots (11-11) did not have a chance to make up the deficit during singles' play.
Antinori earned his second win of the day, securing a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6. David Sandi was also victorious at No. 3 (6-0, 6-3), and Fabricio Galvan earned the win at No. 4 (6-0, 6-4).
The Lancers are in the midst of a two-week stint in Mobile, Ala. Grace will remain on site for next week's NAIA National Championships, competing for the first time as a full team since 1988.
