WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's softball season officially concluded on Saturday with a doubleheader against No. 12 Marian.
The Knights defeated Grace 11-2 and 9-1 at Coach Phil Dick Field.
In between games, Grace honored its four-player graduating class (Taylor Fonseca, Madison Howard, Dori Knight, Britney Young) for Senior Day.
Grace started the game with tremendous energy and struck first. After retiring Marian in the top of the first, the Lady Lancers (5-43, 4-26 Crossroads League) took an early lead in the bottom half.
Jaden Cardoso hit a double, and she came home to score on an RBI double by Young.
Marian equaled the score in the top of the second. The Knights loaded the bases with nobody out, but strong defense from Grace's Jeri Ellis, Cardoso and Ashley Beckler helped limit the Knights to just one run.
The Knights did manage to take the lead 2-1 after a two-out error was committed by Grace.
Grace repeated its scoring recipe in the third inning. Cardoso doubled, and Young drove her in with another RBI double to tie the game 2-2.
Marian seized control of the game with a four-run fourth inning to claim a 6-2 lead. The Knights added an insurance run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Cardoso batted 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs, and Young was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Howard and Trinity Christmas each hit 1 for 2.
The second game started slowly with neither side scoring over the first two innings. Marian dealt a lethal blow in the third inning, however, with a grand slam to open up a comfortable lead.
The Knights followed that up with five more runs over the next two innings to end the game after five (eight-run rule).
The only run Grace was able to manage came from the bat of Carly Ruiz. In the bottom of the fourth, Ruiz lofted a solo home run over the center field fence. It marked her first collegiate home run.
Ruiz, Elena Rolley and Jessica Kaurich were each 1 for 2.
