Second-half outburst propels Lancers

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A quick explosion on offense lifted Grace's men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Lawrence Tech on Saturday.

The Blue Devils scored first, but the Lancers had the final say with three goals after halftime.

The first half was largely a midfield battle. Each team had limited chances with only six shots attempted during the opening 45 minutes.

The first shot of the match was Grace's best look of the half. Thirteen minutes into the contest, Jules Peycelon unleashed a 30-yard strike that beat LTU's goalkeeper but caromed off the crossbar.

Grace's only other shot of the half was an attempt from Tyler Brueckman off a corner kick that went wide.

LTU took the lead into halftime by netting one of its four shots. The Blue Devils scored in close range after a sustained run of play in Grace's back end, accounting for three corner kicks in a two-minute span.

The Lancers seemed to be a new team after halftime. Grace threatened immediately as a shot in the opening seconds from Ethan Vigario bounced off the goalpost. Martim Cardoso missed the quick rebounded effort after Vigario's miss.

Cardoso made good on his next attempt. Grace took a quick corner kick, and two fast passes from Jonny Mora and Flavio Cruz put Cardoso in a dangerous position in front of the goal. Cardoso thumped his shot past the goalkeeper to level the score 1-1.

Not long afterwards, Cardoso put Grace ahead. Blake Burns won possession for Grace deep in LTU's end of the field. He passed to Mora who pinpointed a cross to Cardoso, and Cardoso volleyed in his shot in the 68th minute to give Grace the lead for good.

The Lancers found an insurance goal in spectacular fashion. Frederik Christmann and Brueckman connected on the right side of the field, and Brueckman passed to Ze Maria Goncalves inside the penalty box. Goncalves took care of the rest, carving out space for himself with a dribble and curving a shot off the left goalpost and into the net beyond the reach of the diving goalkeeper.

The Blue Devils did not have a response, allowing Grace to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Matteo Conci earned the win in goal for Grace, saving six shots in 90 minutes.

The Lancers have a challenging road trip ahead next week. Grace will travel to Florida to play No. 7 St. Thomas on Thursday and Southeastern on Saturday.
