Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Grace scores late to top No. 24 UNOH

LIMA, Ohio - A late winner gave No. 15 Grace's women's soccer team a marquee Top-25 victory on Saturday.

Aitana Arguis scored the game winner with five minutes left in regulation, lifting Grace to a 1-0 win at No. 24 Northwestern Ohio (UNOH).

"I've been so blessed and proud of these women for their resilience and flexibility. We've had trying times these last 10 days, and I'm not sure anyone outside of our camp can fully appreciate today's win," said Grace head coach Michael Voss.

Grace's defense was impenetrable on the windy afternoon, despite the team playing at less than full strength. The Racers had only two shots on goal in the full 90 minutes.

Bethany Blackwood recorded the shutout in goal by making two saves. She was protected well by the backline of Amber Meade, Erin Crew, Arguis and Kimberly Aalbue.

Grace earned the first shot of the match when Danae Moriarty's attempt was saved.

The Racers had more chances in the half after Moriarty's shot, but Grace's defense largely kept UNOH in check.

The teams were scoreless as the match reached halftime.

Grace began the second half on a dynamic note. The Lady Lancers pinned the Racers in their defensive end for the first 25 minutes of the half, producing a number of strong chances.

With 22 minutes left in regulation, Grace's possession produced a 1-on-1 with UNOH's goalkeeper. But Izzy Fenn's shot whisked wide of the goal.

Madison Tuma also had a shot on goal saved early in the second half. With six minutes left, Tuma had another shot blocked after a strong build-up by Grace's attack.

The goal eventually came from an unlikely play in the 86th minute. The Racers cleared a ball into the midfield toward Arguis. Arguis then lofted a high cross into the penalty box. UNOH's goalkeeper misjudged the ball, allowing it to bounce untouched into the back of the net.

The Racers were unable to generate a shot over the final nine minutes of regulation; UNOH managed just one shot total over the last 25 minutes of the match.

"We had eight players unavailable for today's match and played literally every available field player. We made significant adjustments, and new players stepped up. Kim, Betsy, Emma, Izzy and Ashley all played important roles and added quality to the pitch," Voss continued. "We beat a fierce No. 24-ranked team today, and the way we played with perseverance was very encouraging."

The Lady Lancers remain on the road Wednesday for a match at Rochester. Grace's next home outing is Sept. 18 against No. 12 Columbia.
