Lancers score season sweep of Pilots

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team secured a season sweep over rival Bethel on Saturday, winning 93-84 at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The No. 14 Lancers (19-5, 8-4 Crossroads League) had five players score in double figures in a well-balanced performance.

Grace has a big week ahead, playing a pair of ranked road matchups. The Lancers will play at No. 16 St. Francis on Tuesday (moved from its originally scheduled date of Wednesday) before ending the week at No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.

The teams opened the game playing evenly for much of the first half. The score was knotted at 21-21 after 10 minutes of action.

Elijah Malone sparked a 6-0 run for Grace at that point, however, with an and-1 after a fastbreak. Grace pushed its lead up to nine a few minutes later on a triple by Jakob Gibbs.

The Lancers rolled into halftime with a 46-36 lead.

Grace shot 52 percent from the floor compared to 38 percent for the Pilots. Grace shot 17 free throws as well to help its cause.

Seven players scored at least three points for Grace in the half, led by nine points by Malone.

The Pilots (12-12, 5-7 CL) quickly trimmed Grace's lead to single digits, converting a 3-point play on the first possession of the half.

Grace still led by 10 after a triple from Carter Stoltzfus with 14:37 remaining, but Bethel chopped Grace's cushion down to three a few minutes later.

With 5:30 left in the game, Grace earned three straight defensive stops. The Lancers took advantage to grab a 10-point edge with three minutes on the clock.

The Pilots refused to go down easily; Bethel made four 3-pointers over the final 2:33 of regulation.

The Pilots managed to pull within five, but Grace put the game on ice at the free throw line. The Lancers made seven free throws in the final minute to secure the 9-point victory.

Grace has now won three straight against the Pilots and five of the past six.

Grace finished the game shooting 49 percent from the floor and 47 percent on 3-pointers.

The Pilots shot 41 percent overall and 33 percent on triples.

Stoltzfus led Grace with 17 points on 4 of 8 shooting from downtown; he added four steals and three assists.

Malone tallied 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks in 21 minutes, and Frankie Davidson double-doubled with 13 points and 10 boards.

Jake Wadding had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, and Jakob Gibbs added 12 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Cade Gibbs notched eight points and two assists, Ian Scott added seven points and five boards, and Brycen Graber scored seven.

Saturday was also Katip Day to honor Grace's longtime president Dr. Bill Katip and his wife Debbie. The couple were honored with a ceremony during halftime of the men's game.
