WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A valiant comeback in regulation for Grace's women's basketball team went for naught as the Lady Lancers lost 90-81 in overtime to Taylor.
The Lady Lancers erased a seven-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation on Saturday, but Taylor's offense would not be slowed in overtime.
Grace began the game with five unanswered points thanks to a 3-pointer from Kaylee Patton and a jumper by Kiersten Poor.
The Lady Lancers maintained a slight lead for the duration of the period, claiming a 23-19 lead by the quarter's end.
Karlee Feldman scored seven points in the quarter, while Poor and Patton added five.
Grace did not score for the first 3:20 of the second quarter, allowing Taylor to take its first lead of the game. The Trojans began the period with 11 straight points to grab a 30-23 lead.
Taylor's offense performed at an efficient level, scoring on eight of its first nine possessions.
Grace managed to keep pace after the slow start and trailed by just three at halftime, 40-37.
Grace shot better than Taylor in the first half — 42 percent to 36 percent. Taylor was also just 4 of 19 on 3-pointers (21 percent).
But Taylor's big advantage was at the foul line. The Trojans were 14 of 14 on free throws before halftime compared to Grace's 4 of 7 effort.
Maddie Ryman led all players with 10 points, and Poor scored eight.
Taylor did not score for the first three minutes, but Grace could not take advantage with two points of its own. The Trojans soon after hit two triples to grab a seven-point advantage.
But Grace refused to fade. The Lady Lancers battled back and eventually tied the score at 50-50 on a 3-pointer by Kensie Ryman.

The game remained tight as the fourth quarter progressed. Taylor tried to pull away with a trio of timely 3-pointers, seizing a six-point lead with 5:50 on the clock.
Grace had no trouble scoring in the quarter, but Taylor could not be stopped from long range. The Trojans' fourth made 3-pointer of the quarter was a banked shot which put Grace in a seven-point hole.
Grace pulled to within three with 3:30 remaining, but Taylor sank its fifth triple of the period on the next possession. The Lady Lancers had more fight left in them, however.
Feldman and Patton were dynamic late, scoring a number of shots in the paint to keep Grace within striking distance.
With 49 seconds left, Patton stole a pass and scored a layup to slice Taylor's lead down to 75-74.
On the next possession, Taylor hit 1 of 2 from the foul line. Maddie Ryman calmly responded with a jump shot to tie the score 76-76 with 20 seconds remaining.
Taylor was unable to score on the final possession, sending the game to overtime.
The Trojans scored on their first two trips in overtime to open up a five-point edge. Grace was unable to find enough defensive stops down the stretch and had to settle for the nine-point defeat.
"It was a great game to watch and see two teams trade punches back and forth all game. I'm really proud of the girls, showing fight to come back late in the game," said Grace head coach Dan Davis. "The reality is we have to do the little things better. We need to make free throws and start getting better at the little things. This team will continue to get better. They show a lot of resilience, and it's a great group to coach every day."
Ryman led Grace with 21 points in defeat. She added six rebounds and four assists without committing a turnover.
Patton scored 17 points with a pair of 3-pointers, and Feldman had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds by shooting 8 of 11 from the floor.
Poor had 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, and Kenzie McMahon notched 8 points, 7 boards and 3 steals.
Both teams shot 42 percent from the floor, but Taylor drilled 13 shots from the 3-point line compared to six for Grace.
Taylor also sank 23 of 26 (89 percent) on free throws compared to Grace's 65 percent (11 of 17).
The Lady Lancers hit the road twice next week, playing at Goshen on Wednesday and Huntington on Saturday.
