Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 10 Lancers continue unbeaten start

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - In a wet, rainy match, Grace's men's soccer team continued its strong season with a 3-0 win against Goshen on Wednesday.

The No. 10 Lancers (8-0-5, 3-0-2 Crossroads League) were consistently dangerous on offense, using goals from three different players to take down the Maple Leafs.

Grace finished with 25 shot attempts for the contest, nearly doubling Goshen's output of 13 shots.

The match began with sheets of rain pelting down on the players. The slick pitch made for plenty of direct action as the squads each had early scoring chances.

The Maple Leafs fired off four shots across the first eight minutes, including a long cross that glanced off the crossbar.

The rain subsided after 15 minutes, allowing for play to settle on the field. As a result, Grace dominated the final 30 minutes of the half.

The Lancers outscored Goshen 9-2 over the final 30 minutes, finding a goal on Grace's second shot of the match.

Daniel Santos Rosa lofted a cross into a dangerous position. The ball bounced to Scanferlato Simone, who cleaned up the loose ball for an easy goal to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

Grace's 1-0 lead held for the duration of the half. The Lancers kept the Maple Leafs pinned back defensively, sending wave after wave of attacks along the sidelines.

But Goshen staved off another goal thanks to stout defending.

Martim Sequiera came the closest to scoring again, but his close-range header missed the target with 20 seconds remaining.

Grace had a 10-6 advantage in shots in the first half; four of Grace's attempts were on frame.

The second half had a similar trend. The Maple Leafs fired off six shots over the first 16 minutes, most coming from outside the 18-yard box.

But Grace soon assumed control of the game, practically eliminating Goshen's chances for the rest of the match.

Goshen shot just one more time across the final 28 minutes.

Grace, however, pressed hard for more goals. The Lancers thought they had a second goal with 15 minutes remaining. Sequiera crossed to Kyle Holwerda, who finished the volley at the far post. But the goal was disallowed due to Grace being called offside.

The Lancers did not have to wait long for a second goal. In the 78th minute, Santos Rosa made a pass into the box. Blake Burns trapped the ball and rifled his shot past the goalkeeper to double Grace's lead.

Two minutes later, Grace scored again. On a quick counterattack, Nelu Calcai made several crafty cuts to fool Goshen's back line. Calcai then made a central pass in the box to Sequiera, who chopped his shot into the net. Sequiera has now scored 13 goals in Grace's 13 matches.

For the game, Grace had 25 shots, 9 shots on goal and 7 corner kicks.

The Lancers registered their eighth shutout of the season. Matteo Conci earned the clean sheet, making two saves. He was protected well by starters Antonio Lobo, Diogo Lopes and Flavio Cruz.

The Lancers are on the road for the next two matches, including a marquee Top-10 matchup this Saturday when No. 10 Grace will play at No. 9 Bethel at 5 p.m. The two are first and second in the league standings.
