Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Moriarty’s goal lifts No. 20 Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A lone goal from Danae Moriarty separated Grace's women's soccer team from Bethel on Saturday.

The No. 20 Lady Lancers outshot Bethel 23-3, but Moriarty's goal made the difference in a 1-0 victory.

Grace (9-3-1, 4-2 Crossroads League) was in clear control throughout the match, forcing Bethel into a defensive shell. The Pilots (5-5-4, 1-4-1 CL) absorbed pressure for most of the evening but eventually fell after Moriarty's finish.

The first half saw a regular theme emerge – Grace possessed the ball and moved consistently into the attacking half of the field.

But Bethel defended well with numbers. Despite Grace owning the majority of possession in the half and creating dangerous moments, the Lady Lancers were held to six shots before halftime.

Grace had multiple headers that could have scored, including ones from Madison Tuma, Ashley VandenBoom and Marlene Menzel.

JJ Aalbue and Danae Moriarty also had attempts in the first half that were denied.

The Pilots' offense consisted of a few counterattacks, one of which resulted in a close headed effort during the opening minutes.

The second half was a complete takeover by the Lady Lancers. Grace outshot Bethel 17-0 and gave the Pilots very little time on the ball.

The Lady Lancers attacked aggressively in the second half, firing off four shots across the first six minutes.

The game-winning moment came not long afterwards in the 57th minute. Kailey Burrell made a strong run along the left side of the field as she shed a few defenders. She put a low cross in front of the face of the goal, and Moriarty slid and redirected the ball into the net.

Grace was not content to sit on its lead and continued to direct the match. The Lady Lancers sent wave after wave of attacks at Bethel's goal, producing close misses from Tuma, Aalbue and VandenBoom.

VandenBoom was very active off the bench, registering six shots in the match. She had two great chances in the final minute, but Bethel's defense made some strong last-ditch defending to prevent her shots from crossing the goal line.

The Lady Lancers finished the match ahead 23-3 in shots and 8-0 in shots on goal. Grace also had the only eight corner kicks of the contest.

Libby Stratton did not need to make a save in her shutout; she was protected well by Erin Crew, Luna Gianotti, Lilli Oberhoff, Simone Castaneda and Lucy Schmitt.

Grace now has seven shutouts across its 13 matches.

Saturday was also Senior Night as Grace recognized its 13-player graduating class.

The Lady Lancers will host Taylor next week on Saturday in their next league matchup. It will be the regular season home finale for Grace with just three matches remaining.
