ALLENDALE, Mich. - Grace's men's tennis team finished up the fall season on Saturday afternoon at NCAA Division II Grand Valley State, falling for the first time this season 5-2.
The Lancers (14-1) earned the first point and the last point of the match, but that was not enough as the Lakers were able to pick up the remaining points to notch the victory.Â
The early advantage from doubles' play put Grace in the lead.
Facundo Paredes and
Ivan Antinori breezed through their match 6-0 and the doubles' point was secured when
Javier Gallego and
Pablo Gregori triumphed at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.
The singles state was a tough series of matches. Grand Valley State would fight back and seize control of the match, winning five straight points from No. 2-6 singles.Â
Gallego, moving up to No. 1 singles, won his matchup in a three-set thriller. Down a set early, he roared back to take the second set and force a tiebreaker. He would then punch through 10-7 to claim the point, capping off an 11-0 undefeated run in singles play so far this season.
The Lancers will take a break from competition and emerge again in the spring to prepare for the NAIA Men's Tennis Championship. They earned automatic qualification to the event to be held in Mobile, Ala., by claiming the Crossroads League tournament title earlier this fall.
