Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Grace cruises past Cougars

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team registered its second straight comfortable win to begin the season.

The Lancers (2-0) dispatched of St. Xavier 84-60 on Tuesday, using stout defense to quiet the Cougars.

Grace limited SXU to 30 percent shooting. The Lancers also outrebounded the Cougars by 16.

Grace started slowly against SXU's defense. The Cougars, on the other hand, caught fire immediately after the tipoff.

SXU hit a trio of 3-pointers over the first three possessions, putting Grace into a 9-0 hole.

The Lancers were not rattled, however, and began to solve SXU's zone defense.

Jakob Gibbs gave Grace a boost midway into the half, hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

The Lancers generally struggled from deep in the half, connecting on just 3 of 15 (20 percent) before halftime. So Grace emphasized touches in the paint to a positive effect.

Frankie Davidson scored on a variety of contested post moves, muscling his way to 12 points in the half. He also blocked three shots.

Ian Scott provided a spark off the bench, tacking on seven points and six boards in 11 minutes of play.

The Lancers grabbed the lead midway through the half and led by as many as seven. By halftime, Grace had claimed a 36-31 lead.

Grace only shot 44 percent from the floor, but the Lancers were stout on defense. The Cougars were stifled into shooting 30 percent as a team.

Jakob Gibbs jumpstarted Grace's attack. He finished an athletic layup while getting fouled. On the next play, he buried a 3-pointer, quickly opening up a 42-31 advantage.

Elijah Malone scored five quick points, including a 3-pointer, to push Grace's lead to 17.

Two minutes later, a triple from Carter Stoltzfus gave Grace a 63-39 lead with 12 minutes to play.

The Lancers' cushion hovered around 20 for most of the remaining minutes. The lead grew to as many as 30 with a late 3-pointer by Cole Beck, and Grace coasted to the final 84-60 margin of victory.

Davidson led Grace with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Scott had 13 points, 10 boards, 5 assists and 2 steals, and Malone also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.

Jakob Gibbs had 12 points, 4 boards and 3 assists, and Cade Gibbs stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

The Lancers will have their first road game of the season on Friday, playing at Governors State.
