WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season with a 85-45 victory over Judson on Tuesday night.
The Lady Lancers trailed by two points after the first quarter, but used suffocating defense to help build a commanding lead. Grace held Judson to single digits in both of the middle quarters.
Grace began the game slowly, struggling out of the gate on offense. The Lady Lancers missed several close-range shots and trailed for most of the quarter.
Midway into the quarter, Grace turned to its bench and began to find its footing.
Jenna Blakley gave Grace a quick boost with four points almost immediately off the bench.
Kate Rulli also made a pair of layups, and a late 3-pointer from
Molly Long gave Grace a late lead at 13-12.
But Judson hit another 3-pointer after Long's, taking a 15-13 lead at the end of the period. Grace shot just 6 of 23 from the floor (26 percent), but the Lady Lancers' defense held Judson into 30 percent shooting as well. All but two of Grace's points in the period came from the bench.
In the second quarter, Grace roared to life. The Lady Lancers' defense was suffocating; the Eagles mustered just four points in the frame, including a basket at the very end of the quarter.
Grace's offense found its rhythm, scoring on a variety of drives. The Lady Lancers poured in 21 second-quarter points to take a commanding 34-19 lead at halftime. Blakley led all players with 10 points in the half.
The Lady Lancers picked up right where they left off in the third quarter. Grace outscored Judson 26-8; Grace's relentless energy gave the Eagles fits as Judson fell behind by more than 30.
In the fourth quarter, Grace coasted and slowly built out its advantage to 40 by the end of the game.
"This was a good way to close out this nonconference portion of the schedule," said Grace head coach
Dan Davis. "We struggled early in the game to knock down shots but our defense was really locked in tonight. I was pleased with the depth scoring that our bench showed tonight, and we look forward to going up against Spring Arbor on Saturday."
Twelve of the 13 Lady Lancers who saw the court scored in a balanced outing. No player had more than 13 points.
Karlee Feldman led the way with 13 points and 17 rebounds, and Blakley finished with 10 points.
Rulli tallied 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, and
Maddie Ryman finished on triple-double watch with 9 points, 9 assists and 7 steals.
The Lady Lancers shot 40 percent from the floor while holding the Eagles to just 27 percent.
Grace's next contest will be their first Crossroads League action of the season. Grace will host Spring Arbor on Saturday at 1 p.m.
