Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lancers tripped up by SAU

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Crossroads League Tournament run for Grace's men's soccer team came to an end on Wednesday.

The No. 13 Lancers were upset by Spring Arbor 1-0 in the tournament semifinals as the Cougars managed to keep their season alive.

Grace's season is not over, however. Earlier this week, Grace learned that it will host an NAIA First and Second Round bracket at 1st Source Bank Field next week. The four-team, three-game bracket will be held on Thursday and Saturday next week.

Grace will learn its opponent as well as the complete NAIA field on Monday afternoon.

The Lancers (11-2-6) lost on Wednesday for just the second time this season. The lone goal in the 63rd minute was all that was needed for the Cougars (7-5-7) to come away victorious.

The match was statistically even with SAU taking 13 shots compared to 11 for Grace. Five of the Lancers' shots were on goal, however, compared to three for SAU.

The first half was evenly played. Each team had chances at goal, and both teams had a goal disallowed.

The Lancers were poised to strike first with Kyle Holwerda providing a central scoring threat for Grace. He had two early shots that were denied.

Holwerda also put the ball in the back of the net in the opening minutes, but the play did not stand due to a hand ball violation.

The middle portions of the half were largely filled with a possession battle. The Lancers had the better part of possession, keeping SAU pinned back for large chunks.

Martim Sequiera entered as a sub late in the half and immediately threatened. He tried a 20-yard free kick that was saved. A few minutes later, Sequiera had another chance, trying a sliding shot after a cross from Frederik Christmann that went wide.

Sequiera also attempted an ambitiously long shot, trying to catch the goalkeeper off his line. But his effort was wide.

The Cougars ended the half strong, possessing the ball well for the final five minutes. SAU also put a ball into the back of the net, but the play was waived off because of an offside call.

The teams entered halftime scoreless. SAU held a slight 7-5 edge in shots.

The Cougars began the second half like they ended the first. SAU provided a few strong chances in the opening minutes, including a shot that railed off the crossbar.

SAU finally broke through 18 minutes into the second half. The Cougars executed a counterattack, sliding a pass into the box for a simple finish.

The Lancers seemed to roar to life in response, generating their best offensive moments after surrendering the goal.

Sequiera had two shots that missed the mark. Juan Camilo Garcia also fired off a pair of shots, including a free kick just outside the box that went high.

Grace tried its best with a few late free kicks. The final one resulted in a headed shot by Diogo Lopes that was saved, which wrapped up Grace's chances.

The Lancers will be making their second appearance in four years to the NAIA tournament under head coach Arron Patrick. Grace will be making its fourth appearance all-time to NAIA Nationals.
