Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball ends opening weekend with sweep

HOOVER, Ala. - Grace's baseball team nabbed two more wins to conclude its opening weekend of the season.

The Lancers swept Trinity International on Saturday, winning 5-1 and 17-2.

Grace took three games in the four-game series with the Trojans. The Lancers yielded just seven runs across 28 innings this weekend.

The first game was a pitchers' duel with each team mustering just five hits apiece.

Kameron Koch impressed in his start, tossing 4.2 innings with no runs and two scattered hits.

Grace held a 2-0 lead by the time that Koch exited from the mound.

In the second inning, Josh Cosme singled, and Collin Lytle entered to run for him. Lytle eventually raced home on a sacrifice bunt, a single and a passed ball.

Grace doubled its lead in the fifth inning. Sam Newkirk was hit by a pitch with one out. He advanced one base at a time, taking advantage of another hit batsman, a wild pitch and a passed ball to put the Lancers on top 2-0.

The Lancers scored three runs over the final two innings; Chris Griffin was involved in two of those runs, plating in the sixth and producing a two-out RBI single in the seventh. The other run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Patrick Danforth.

Kyle Aten tossed the final two innings in relief, yielding one run with two hits and a pair of strikeouts.

Griffin hit 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1 walk and 1 RBI, Lytle scored twice as a pinch runner, and Danforth added 1 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base.

The second game saw an explosion of offense by Grace. The Lancers wasted little time scoring, producing nine runs in the first frame.

Austin Carr had three RBIs alone in the first inning, and Griffin, Newkirk and Carr each had a double.

Grace added six more runs across the next two innings. Danforth drove in a run with a double in the second, and Jake Cox had a sacrifice fly.

Carr continued his torrid day at the plate with a solo home run in the third inning, and Newkirk and Alex Rich follow that up with back-to-back doubles.

After three innings were complete, Grace led 15-2.

Grace held the Trojans scoreless for the final five innings thanks to the contributions of Grace's bullpen.

Steven Hernandez made the start, tossing three innings and giving up two runs.

Hunter Schumacher was practically untouchable. He struck out five of the six batters he faced in relief to register the win.

Joey Springer and Bret Wilhelmi also tossed scoreless innings of relief.

Carr hit 3 for 6 with 5 RBIs and two runs scored, and Danforth was a perfect 4 for 4 with three runs driven in.

Cox had three RBIs, Newkirk doubled twice, and Rich had two doubles and three runs scored. Cal Curiel, Lytle, Cosme and Pawlik each plated twice.

The Lancers will end their time in Alabama next weekend with a four-game series against Aquinas.
