Grace ties program record with win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's basketball team picked up a 68-54 win over Columbia International on Thursday afternoon.

The win was the Lady Lancers 20th on the season, which matches the most in program history for a single season.

Grace boasted a well balanced offensive attack, with 10 players getting in the scoring column. Karlee Felman led all players with 18 points.

The Lady Lancers will go for a program record 21st win on Friday night at 7 p.m. when they play the No. 1 seeded College of the Ozarks in the fifth-place game.

The Lady Lancers led from the opening tip. Feldman and Kiersten Poor combined to score Grace's first nine points and put the Lady Lancers ahead of the Rams 9-2 just three minutes into play.

A pair of trifectas from CIU cut Grace's advantage down to four, but Kenzie McMahon answered with a strong driving layup that resulted in an old-fashioned 3-point play.

Sally Mortensen checked in and immediately scored after Feldman made a clever pass that found the freshman guard wide open under the hoop.

The Rams couldn't contain Feldman early on as she dominated CIU in the paint on nearly every possession.

Peyton Murphy and Feldman each scored late in the quarter to send the game to its first break with the Lady Lancers leading 25-12.

Grace shot 76 percent from the floor in the first quarter compared to CIU's 33 percent.

Poor and Maddie Ryman started the second stanza with back-to-back 3-point shots to strengthen Grace's lead.

The Lady Lancers' lead topped 20 points after Maddie Ryman converted two tries at the charity stripe.

The Lady Lancers' red-hot offense cooled in the second quarter, but their defense held CIU to just 4 of 15 from the floor to maintain a 39-22 lead as the game entered the half.

Grace was 53 percent from the field after 20 minutes and was a perfect 5 of 5 from the charity stripe. The Rams were held to just 29 percent from the floor.

Feldman had an impressive stat line in the first half, recording 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists to go along with 2 steals and 1 block.

The Lady Lancers saw their lead dwindle to 15 early in the second half, but quickly found an offensive response.

After McMahon rattled off four straight for Grace, Kaylee Patton scored to give Grace a 22-point lead.

McMahon tacked on a pair of free throws late to send Grace to the final frame leading 56-34.

Olivia Pearson assisted on a Feldman layup that pushed Grace's advantage to 25, the biggest of the game.

With the game well in hand Grace began to sub liberally, holding on for the 68-54 win.

Grace finished the game 44 percent from the floor. The Lady Lancers dominated the battle inside, outsourcing the Rams 34-18 in the paint and out rebounding them 39-30.

McMahon had an impressive outing, narrowly missing a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Poor also added 10 points.
