Grace splits twin bill at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace's softball team took one of two on the road at Goshen on Monday.

The Lady Lancers (8-12) improved to 5-3 in Crossroads League play as a result of the split.

In the first game, Grace had trouble quieting the bats of the Maple Leafs (11-9, 1-5 CL) as Goshen won 9-3.

The Lady Lancers were as efficient as possible, tallying three hits in the game with three runs scored. Bethany Gardner and Kendra Arnold each had solo home runs in the game for Grace, and Izabela Duran also drove in a run.

But the Maple Leafs used a five-run fourth inning to break open a 1-1 ballgame, and Grace was unable to respond. Jeri Ellis stole two bases in the contest.

In the second game, Grace scored early and late to win 5-3.

The Lady Lancers scored three runs across the first two innings to go ahead. Cassandra Hayes produced a two-out double to score Duran for the first run of the game.

In the following inning, Kyrah Lewis and Montana Brincks plated as Grace led 3-0.

Goshen managed to tie the game by scoring one run in the second, third and fourth innings, and the game remained deadlocked at 3-3 until the seventh.

Ellis singled and stole second base with two outs to give Grace a chance. Jessica Kaurich produced a clutch single on the next at-bat to drive in the go-ahead run.

Two walks and a hit by pitch brought in Kaurich as Grace led 5-3.

Ellis entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to pitch and promptly shut down the Maple Leafs. Ellis was credited with the save, while Madison Bremer earned the win.

Hayes hit 2 for 4, and Duran had 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk and 1 stolen base.

The Lady Lancers have a nonconference doubleheader scheduled at home on Thursday against Calumet-St. Joseph at 2 p.m. Grace will then travel to St. Francis on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
