LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Grace's softball team took on a nationally-ranked team for a three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers were unable to hand No. 14 Georgia Gwinnett a loss across the series, but Grace gave the Grizzlies a fierce battle in the finale.
The Grizzlies impressed over the first two contests, winning 14-0 and 16-0. The third game saw GGC win 2-1.
Jeri Ellis, Cassandra Hayes and Kendra Arnold had hits for Grace in the opener, and Carly Ruiz had Grace's lone hit in the second outing.
The third and final game was a memorable clash. Kierstin Fickas was called to the mound, and the freshman delivered. She held the Grizzlies' high-powered offense to just two runs — neither of which was earned.Â
Grace stunned Gwinnett by taking an early lead as well. The Lady Lancers had two hits in the first inning but could not push a run across. They righted that wrong in the second inning.
Kendra Arnold led off the inning with a walk, and Emily Revercomb entered to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt moved Revercomb to second base, Montana Brincks doubled to right-center field to score a run and hand Grace a 1-0 lead.
The lead held until the bottom of the fourth. The Grizzlies scored on a throwing error by Grace to tie the game.
They proceeded to take the lead a few batters later from a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Lancers had two baserunners in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not drive in a tying run to extend the game.
Fickas limited the Grizzlies to five hits with two unearned runs and two walks. Bethany Gardner hit 2 for 4 from the leadoff position, and Jessica Kaurich drew two walks.
The Lady Lancers will make the trek to Ohio to play Shawnee State on Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
