Lancers nab 10th league victory

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's baseball team earned a unique split at Marian on Monday.

The Lancers won the opener 10-8 to earn their 10th Crossroads League victory of the season. The second game was won by the Knights 8-3 after 4 1/2 innings were complete; the game was called early due to a power outage with Marian's lights.

The opening game saw 20 runs — scored across just six different innings. Grace scored first and last to secure a 10-8 victory.

The Lancers began the scoring early with a four-run first inning; Grace was the beneficiary of multiple Marian errors in the inning to grab the early advantage.

The Knights jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs.

Grace countered with a three-run sixth. Josh Cosme, Patrick Danforth and Alex Rich hit doubles on three straight at-bats to lift the Lancers to a 7-3 lead.

Marian showed resolve and claimed their first lead over the next two innings. The Knights pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth and then three more in the seventh to claim an 8-7 edge.

Grace refused to trail for long, however. In the next half-inning, Danforth and Rich singled to give Grace baserunners. Lucas Slager doubled to bring in one run, and Austin Carr followed up with a two-run single.

Caleb Farney took care of the rest from the mound. He allowed just two baserunners across the final two innings — one via single and one via error. One of those runners he picked off at first base. The final batter was retired with a ground out.

Rich had a busy day at the plate. He was hit by a pitch twice and notched 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 double, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base.

Jeff Pawlik hit 3 for 5, Cal Curiel drove in two runs, and Danforth hit 2 for 6. Cameron Woehnker also pinch ran and scored twice.

The doubleheader was initially scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but the games were pushed back to 3 p.m. as a result of inclement weather in the morning.

As a result, the second game needed to be played under the lights at Marian's ballpark. The ending of the game was cut short partially due to that fact in a bizarre end to the day.

A power issue plagued Marian's light system, causing the game to be called in the bottom of the fifth; the Knights were the victors by the score of 8-3 in the uniquely-shortened contest.

Slager hit 2 for 3, Pawlik was 2 for 2 with a run, and Bradyn McIntosh was 1 for 1 with a run.

Grace has now won double-digit Crossroads League games for the fourth time in program history and second time during head coach Ryan Roth's four-year career.

The Lancers end the week at home with a weekend series against Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Friday's games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with Saturday to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day to honor Grace's graduating class. The ceremony will begin at noon on Saturday.
