SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Grace's softball team took one of two on the road against Spring Arbor on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers won 5-1 in the first game before falling 11-3 in the finale.
Grace used two homers and a complete-game pitching performance from Jeri Ellis in the opener to win.
The Lady Lancers (9-14, 6-6 Crossroads League) began the scoring in the second inning thanks to an RBI single from Kendra Arnold.
Grace increased its lead to 2-0 in the third. Izabela Duran led off the inning with a triple, and she raced home after a ground ball from Ellis.
The Cougars (10-13, 4-8 CL) scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third, and the game remained 2-1 until the fifth inning.
Grace used a two-out rally in the fifth to gain separation. Jessica Kaurich reached base with two outs, and Bethany Gardner promptly brought her home with a two-run home run.
Cassandra Hayes followed up with a solo homer on the very next pitch to increase Grace's lead to 5-1.
Ellis took care of the rest from the mound. She held the Cougars scoreless for the final four innings to secure the victory. Ellis allowed nine hits with one walk in the complete game.
Hayes batted 3 for 3, Arnold was also perfect at 2 for 2, and Kaurich hit 2 for 4.
Grace's momentum carried into the start of the second game. The Lady Lancers plated two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-out, two-run single by Taylor Hodgen.
But the Cougars responded in the bottom of the first. SAU scored three runs of its own to take the lead for good.
The Cougars had two more big innings, including a four-run third and a four-run sixth. The Cougars were able to end the game early due to the run-rule in the sixth inning (eight-run lead after five completed innings).
The only offense Grace was able to produce after the first inning was a solo home run by Gardner — her second blast of the doubleheader.
Gardner finished the game hitting 2 for 2 with two runs, and Ellis hit 2 for 3.
The Lady Lancers are home for their next two matchups. Grace will host No. 16 Marian on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 3 p.m.
