FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The 2022 campaign kicked off in style for Grace's volleyball team.
The Lady Lancers won both of their matches on Friday at the season-opening Onset Tournament at Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum.
Grace swept Oakland City in the season opener and also defeated Rochester 3-1 to cap off a strong first day.
The Lady Lancers looked sharp throughout the opening match. Grace pounded out 43 kills on a .284 percentage compared to Oakland City's 27 kills on a .120 percentage.
In the first set, Grace gained separation after back-to-back kills from Cassadi Colbert. OCU rallied, but Grace pulled away late and ended the set on a 7-1 run to win by seven.
The second set was not close. Grace scored the first five points, quickly led by double digits and cruised to a 25-12 win.
The Lady Lancers never trailed in the third set. OCU kept the score close and trailed by just two late in the set, but Grace concluded the match with a 5-1 spurt to win 25-19.
Jadyn Ross and Colbert had 10 kills apiece to lead all players. Morgan Syoen posted a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs, and Grace Erwin racked up 20 digs.
Sahara Bee had seven kills and three block assists, Livia Tate had seven kills in her collegiate debut, and Katie Swanson added six kills.
The second match of the day was a hard-fought win in four for the Lady Lancers.
Midway into the first set, Grace won seven out of eight points to gain separation. Jadyn Block had two kills and a block during that stretch.
The Lady Lancers continued to hold the margin and won 25-19 in the opening set.
Grace's offense went cold in the second set; the Lady Lancers committed 14 attack errors and fell 25-13.
Rochester was in a rhythm to begin the third set, winning the first three points and claiming a 10-4 lead.
But Grace quickly battled back and took the lead at 15-14 following an ace by freshman Emma Blackford.
The Lady Lancers served the ball well late. Grace had five aces in the third set alone, including three down the stretch from Ross as Grace won 25-17.
The fourth set was the closest of the day for Grace. Two kills apiece from Tate and Bee sparked a 5-0 run for Grace, and Grace opened up an 18-12 advantage.
Rochester made Grace sweat down the stretch by trimming the score to 24-23, but a service error ended the match to close out a 2-0 day for the Lady Lancers.
Bee led all players with 13 kills, and Colbert had 12 kills and two block assists. Erwin (17 digs), Ross (14 digs) and McKenzie Stakely (10) all were strong on the back row, and Syoen added 35 assists and nine digs.
Block (9 kills), Swanson (8) and Tate (7) contributed offensively as well.
The Lady Lancers will end the tournament on Saturday with two more matches. Grace will take on Lawrence Tech at 9 a.m. and Siena Heights at 1 p.m.
