Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball picks up win vs Rams

SYLVANIA, Ohio - Grace's volleyball team registered their fourth win of the season at the Lourdes Classic in Ohio.

The Lady Lancers lost a pair of matches to begin the tournament, but Grace ended the tourney with a five-set victory against Bluefield.

In Friday's opener against St. Xavier, the Lady Lancers made plays late to win a tight opening set.

SXU had 16 kills but committed eight errors. Grace, on the other hand, had 10 kills on a .276 percentage in the set.

Grace pulled ahead late thanks to kills from Jadyn Block and Livia Tate, but the Cougars rallied to tie the score at 23-23. Block produced another kill on the next rally, and SXU had an attack error on the final point to give Grace a 25-23 victory.

But the Cougars had the final say in the match. In the second set, the Cougars struck back with a 25-21 victory. Grace had just eight kills during the set.

The Lady Lancers seemed poised to regain the lead, holding a late 20-18 lead in the third set. But SXU rattled off seven unanswered points to claim the set.

Grace fought from behind throughout the fourth set and was unable to grab a lead. The Cougars went on to clinch the match with a 25-22 victory.

Alisha Leffring had eight kills and three block assists in her season debut, and Jadyn Ross had seven kills and 10 digs.

Morgan Syoen had a double-double with 19 assists and a team-best 16 digs, Tate added 6 kills, 1 solo block and 5 block assists, and Grace Erwin had 15 digs.

Grace's offense struggled to get in sync during Friday's nightcap against Lourdes. The Lady Lancers were swept in three sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.

As a team, Grace had 29 kills and 24 attack errors for a hitting percentage of .047. Lourdes, conversely, 34 kills on nine errors for a .240 percentage.

Leffring was again Grace's most effective offensive player with seven kills on a .429 percentage, adding a pair of block assists.

Katie Swanson also had seven kills, Block had five kills, Syoen added 15 assists and eight digs, and Erwin had 16 digs.

Swanson starred during Saturday's comeback win against Bluefield. The senior amassed a career-high 28 kills to lead Grace's victory.

The Rams won the first and third sets by the identical score of 26-24. Grace had its worst offensive outputs during those two sets, hitting under .070 in each loss.

The Lady Lancers were dominant in the second set, winning 25-10. Grace won 10 of the first 11 points and never looked back.

After the Rams regained the lead with a third-set win, Grace needed to win to stay alive in the fourth.

The Lady Lancers did just that, opening up a 23-17 advantage and holding on for a 25-23 win. Colbert ended the set with back-to-back kills.

Midway into the decisive fifth set, Grace rattled off five straight points to seize control. Swanson had three kills during the stretch, and Emma Blackford aced for another point.

The Rams continued to battle and pulled within a point late. But Tate ended the match with kills on the 14th and 15th point as Grace won 15-13 to complete the comeback.

Swanson's 28 kills came on a .458 percentage, and she added four block assists. Colbert also reached double figures with 11 kills.

Syoen erupted with 50 assists and 16 digs, Leffring had seven kills and seven block assists, and Erwin led all players with 29 digs.

Jadyn Ross (19 digs), Paige Vander Goot (13 digs) and McKenzie Stakely (12) boosted Grace's back row, and Ross also served up four aces.

The Lady Lancers have another nonconference tournament next weekend at Bethel.
