SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace's tournament run came to an end on Wednesday for the women's tennis team. The Crossroads League quarterfinal match, postponed one day due to rain, went to the Cougars 5-2.
The Lady Lancers (5-6) struck first to earn the doubles' point and go ahead 1-0. Partners
Anna Graves and
Addy Jarvis, No. 2 doubles, were first to score, winning 6-3. The next doubles set went to Spring Arbor 6-1. The clincher came from
Kiersten Martin and
Lydia Ruegsegger, who secured the doubles point 6-4.
The slate of singles matches was where the match turned. Grace struggled to win only one point while one match went to a third-set tiebreaker.
Anna Graves, who remains unbeaten in singles' play this season, took her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.
Gretchen Adams' match at No. 6 singles went to a third set to determine a winner. She jumped ahead in the first set 7-5, but was unable to finish off the point. The second set went 2-6 and 4-10 in the tiebreaker.
Ruegsegger nearly forced a third set, but fell 2-6, 5-7. The final three points went to Spring Arbor to advance to the next round.
Grace's next match will be on Sept. 26 at Miller Athletic Complex. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
