Lancers draw in opening match of Labor Day Classic

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Grace's mens' soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with Baker University on Saturday evening in their first match of the Labor Day Classic.

The Lancers (3-0-2) were taking on the Wildcats who were coming into the match fresh off of upsetting the No. 5 team in the country.

Martim Sequeira had the first quality chance of the match. He cut through the Baker (2-2-1) defense and his point-blank chance drifted past the far goal post and rolled harmlessly out of bounds.

Five minutes later, Grace had another chance on goal as Sequeira again proved his offensive prowess. The senior's shot rocketed on goal and forced an acrobatic save from the Wildcat keeper.

The Lancers' tally came with just over ten minutes left in the half. Daniel Santos Rosa lifted a pass behind the Wildcats defense and Juan Camilo Garcia chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net for the go-ahead goal.

Matteo Conci kept the Lancers ahead when he made a save late in the half and sent the game to the intermission.

As the second half was in its early stages, Sequeira nearly had an incredible goal. Sequeira tried a shot from near midfield as the Baker keeper was well out of his net. The shot went wide of the empty net as Grace remained ahead 1-0.

The Wildcats began to press as the chances started to mount. A scramble in the Lancers box nearly resulted in the tying goal but Grace's defense cleared the ball to stall Baker's attack.

Just minutes later Conci was forced to be at his best again to maintain Grace's lead. A dangerous cross from Baker was punched clear, but The Wildcats continued to control the pace of play.

Baker would finally break through on their 10th shot of the game, as the ball squeaked past Conci and tied the game at one with 11 minutes left to play.

The game closed with a frenzied pace as both teams strained for the game-winning goal.

Baker came the closest to finding that deciding mark when a ball destined for the upper 90 was fought off by Conci to keep the game level and preserve the 1-1 draw.

Sequeira led Grace with five shots, and Conci made four saves.

The Lancers will be in action on Monday as they take on No. 5 Oklahoma Wesleyan.
