WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The goals came early and often for the No. 24-ranked Grace women's soccer team on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (3-0) were unstoppable in a 12-0 dismantling of West Virginia Tech at 1st Source Bank Field. Grace has outscored its first three opponents 21-0 to start the 2022 campaign.
Grace enjoyed a goal from nine different players, including two goals apiece from Madison Tuma, Danae Moriarty and Sam Vondersaar. Moriarty and Vondersaar each assisted a goal as well, and Kailey Burrell had two assists.
It took Grace less than five minutes to get on the scoreboard. Burrell picked out Janni Bettin for the first of many goals to be scored on Saturday night.
Tuma scored both of her goals within 10 minutes of each other. Her first goal came in the 16th minute, when she finished off a rebound from her own saved shot.
Not long after, Tuma sent a rocket to the far post; her shot was a straight line to the top corner of the net.
JJ Aalbue echoed Tuma's goal just three minutes later. She hit nearly the identical shot from almost the same spot on the field, burning the net with her 30th-minute blast. Marlene Menzel registered the assist.
Moriarty scored twice before halftime as well. In the 32nd minute, Amber Meade played a lofted pass over the Golden Bears' offside trap. Moriarty calmly finished the breakaway opportunity.
A few minutes later, Moriarty's hustle created another goal. She intercepted the ball from the Golden Bears' defense and finished her shot into the open net.
Shannon Farnsworth and Vondersaar generated another first-half goal with clever passing. The final pass picked out Tori Twombly for a finish in the penalty box.
The ninth and final goal of the half came from Menzel. Lilli Oberhoff made a dangerous run in the final minute of the half and was fouled just outside of the penalty box. Menzel stepped up and quickly converted the free kick in the waning seconds of the half.
Grace went into halftime with a 9-0 lead, outshooting Tech 21-0 over the first 45 minutes.
The second half saw another quick goal from the Lady Lancers. Luisa Machado created the goal with a strong run on the left side of the field. Her cross was finished in front of the goal by Helena Vieira Rijo just two minutes into the half.
Grace continued to possess the ball fluidly and had several chances against the Golden Bears' high offsides trap.Â
With 20 minutes remaining in the contest, Rebecca Steininger relayed a quick pass from Lea Fricke onward to Vondersaar. Vondersaar took care of the rest, beating the goalkeeper in a 1-on-1 situation.
A few minutes later, Grace found its 12th goal. Megan DeBoest led Burrell on a long run. Burrell's square pass found Savanna Tate for a quick finish, marking the final goal of the match.
Libby Stratton and Sofia Lerro combined for the shutout in goal for Grace. The Golden Bears had three shots compared to 34 for Grace.
The Lady Lancers play at home again on Monday, hosting Point Park for a 2 p.m. match.
