UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team came up short in a comeback bid against Taylor on Wednesday.
The Lancers, who were seeking a season sweep of the Trojans, fell behind by two sets to start the match. Grace rallied in the third but ultimately fell in four sets on the road.
To begin the match, Grace's offense struggled to keep pace with the Trojans. Taylor racked up 29 kills over the first two sets, winning 25-20 and 25-19.
Grace grabbed a quick 6-2 lead in the first set, but the Trojans responded swiftly and charged in front 16-13.
The Lancers managed to level the score at 16s and again at 19-19 thanks to Livia Tate's blocking. But the Trojans won six of the final seven points to clinch the set.
Early in the second set, Taylor scored four straight points to open up a slight lead. Grace was unable to bridge the gap and lost the set by six.
Grace was determined to fight back, however. Early kills in the third set from Jadyn Ross, Tate, Katie Swanson and Cassadi Colbert pushed the Lancers ahead 10-6.
In the middle of the set, Liz Schmidt aced once, and Morgan Syoen aced on back-to-back serves which led to a dominant 18-9 advantage.
Grace continued its onslaught and rolled to an 11-point rout (25-14).
The fourth set began with a series of runs. Grace struck first with four unanswered points; Taylor countered with a 5-0 run and later had three straight points.
With Grace still trailing, Ross, Tate and Sahara Bee produced kills on consecutive plays.
But with Grace behind 21-20, Taylor tallied three late kills to clinch the match at 25-21.
Ross had 11 kills and seven digs, and Tate had seven kills on a .357 percentage to go along with four block assists.
Swanson and Bee each tallied seven kills with two block assists, and Alisha Leffring added 6 kills, 1 solo block and 3 block assists.
Colbert had 6 kills, 3 digs, 1 solo block and 1 block assist, Schmidt had nine digs and three aces, and McKenzie Stakely had eight digs.
Riley Owens tallied 20 assists with 14 digs, and Syoen had 16 assists, 7 digs and 3 aces.
The Lancers are off until Oct. 18 when they travel to St. Francis for another Crossroads League match.
