No. 2 Cougars get by Grace

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace's women's soccer team gave No. 2 Spring Arbor a battle on the road in Michigan.

The Cougars managed a narrow 2-0 victory on Saturday in the Crossroads League clash.

Grace largely limited SAU to shots from well outside the penalty box, but two crosses were all the Cougars needed to score twice.

The match remained scoreless for the first 26 minutes of play.

The Cougars found the breakthrough moment on a corner kick; SAU headed in the corner in the 27th minute.

The score remained 1-0 until halftime. SAU continued to amass shots and fouls in the first half but were limited to just one goal thanks to stout defending by the Lancers.

The second goal came 17 minutes into the second half. Grace lost the ball near midfield, and SAU immediately raced down the sideline and pounded a cross into the box.

The Lancers missed on a chance to clear the cross, and the Cougars took advantage to shoot into the net to double their lead.

Grace's best chance to score came 14 minutes later. After a strong buildup on the right edge of the field, Rylee Burns quickly passed into the box toward Rosalie Gefrorer; Gefrorer took a dribble to evade a defender and hit a low shot at the Cougars' goal, but SAU's goalkeeper made a diving save to deny the chance.

The Lancers get a chance to return home for two straight matches, including Oct. 21 against Huntington and Oct. 25 versus Goshen. Oct. 21 is also scheduled to be Grace's Senior Night to honor the graduating class.
