GOSHEN, Ind. - Fueled by a hat trick performance by
Martim Sequeira, Grace College easily dispatched Goshen 3-0 on Wednesday night.
With the win the Lancers (13-2-1, 7-0-1 Crossroads League) will play for the conference crown on Saturday night against Bethel. Grace needs a win or a tie on Saturday to clinch the Crossroads League regular season title and an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament.
The Lancers started in signature fashion blitzing the Goshen (1-13-2, 0-6-1 CL) defense with an early goal.
Daniel Santos Rosa and
Seongwhi Lee quickly worked the ball from an attacking corner and into the box where Sequiera was to net his first goal just 7:13 into the game. It is the sixth goal that Grace has scored within 7the first 10-minutes of a game this season.
The Lancers kept the pressure up after the early marker and a pair of corner kicks before adding another tally.
Lee played a soft touch pass to
Maxime Bregeon who lofted a crossing pass into the box and Sequeira once again capitalized on the setup to score his second marker of the night.
With Grace leading by two goals less than 20 minutes into the game the pace of play slowed.
Bregeon had a shot blocked and the Lancers had a pair of shots go wide late in the half. The Maple Leafs had two shots on goal, but
Matteo Conci stopped both attempts.
In the second Goshen was the early aggressor. The Maple Leafs had a corner kick and two shots within the first ten minutes of the second stanza.
Grace responded with a dangerous attack of their own, but
Frederik Christmann's try on goal was denied by the keeper.
Determined to cut the lead in half, the Maple Leafs had sustained pressure for portions of the half, but were unable to solve Grace's stout defensive play.
With 15 minutes left in the game the Lancers scored again.
Santosa Rosa and Sequeira played give-and-go with the ball which resulted in a Sequeira goal as the senior put the finishing touches on his second hat trick of the season.
The rest of the half expired without incident as Grace secured the 3-0 victory.
The Lancers finished the game with a 13-10 shot advantage and a narrow 9-7 advantage on corner kicks. Conci saved all three shots he faced. With three goals, Sequeira is now tied for the Crossroads League lead in goals (16).
Grace and Bethel is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
