Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer yields late goal

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on Wednesday.

The Lancers dominated the match versus Goshen, piling up 20 shot attempts. But the Maple Leafs used one strike in the final five minutes to pull off the upset.

Grace finished the match with a 20-5 shot advantage. The gap was even more drastic in the second half when the Lancers outshot Goshen 18-2.

But one goal against the run of play was enough to push the Maple Leafs to the win.

The Lancers owned the majority of the possession in the first half. Grace moved fluidly and frequently into Goshen's end of the field but struggled to connect its final passes together in the penalty box.

The Lancers managed two shots in the first half, both off the foot of Rosalie Gefrorer.

Goshen defended with numbers and were poised to counterattack when given a chance. The Maple Leafs shot three times in the first half.

Neither team could find a goal before halftime as the teams broke for the intermission.

The Lancers seemed poised to score in the second half. Grace pelted Goshen's goal with shots.

Cassidy Felger had a few shots from beyond the penalty box that were close, including one try that forced a leaping save near the crossbar from Goshen's goalkeeper.

Gefrorer and Sam Vondersaar also had chances to score, and Tori Twombly had a shot in the box go wide.

The Lancers also earned five corner kicks in the second half; one produced a glancing header from Jasmin Slump which was blocked wide of the net.

But despite Grace's 18 second-half shots, the Lancers were held off the scoreboard.

Goshen's lone goal came with just over four minutes to play. The Maple Leafs advanced quickly down the sideline and fired a shot from a tight angle that found its way into the back of the net.

A stunned Grace squad was unable to find a late equalizer and had to settle for the defeat.

The Lancers will end the regular season on the road at Bethel on Saturday. A win would guarantee Grace's spot in next week's Crossroads League Tournament.
