WINONA LAKE, Ind. - In a high-profile showdown, No. 2 Grace's men's basketball team blew past No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan 93-82 on Tuesday.
The Lancers (8-0, 2-0 Crossroads League) remain perfect on the season with a stellar second half.
Grace found itself trailing by 11 at halftime, but the Lancers blitzed IWU 52-30 in the second half to keep the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center rocking.
Cade Gibbs led all players with 24 points; he shot 10 of 12 from the floor, including 4 of 5 on 3-pointers. He led five players for Grace who scored in double figures.
The first half was an explosion of offense. The teams both shot over 50 percent from the floor, amassing 93 points between the sides.
Elijah Malone embraced the spotlight to start the game. The senior center scored the first eight points for Grace's team across a two-minute span, including two 3-pointers.
A few minutes later, back-to-back triples from Cade Gibbs and Jakob Gibbs lifted the Lancers to a 14-7 lead.
But the Wildcats (5-2, 1-1 CL) steadily clawed back to take their first lead at 23-20.
Eight points off the bench from Brett Sickafoose helped keep Grace in range, but IWU had a red-hot shooting touch in the half.
The Wildcats scored 14 points over the final 4:10, pulling away for a 52-41 lead at halftime.
IWU shot 57 percent from the floor, including 56 percent (9 of 16) on 3-pointers. They also had zero turnovers in an efficient outing.
The Lancers came roaring out of the locker room to start the second half, however. Grace scored five points before a minute had expired to nearly cut the deficit in half.
Grace's momentum continued with an and-1 from Jakob Gibbs and a reverse dunk by Malone, both plays which got the capacity crowd to its feet.
Ian Scott tied the score with a reverse layup at 57-57, and a steal and layup from Cade Gibbs put Grace on top by two on the next play.
The Lancers' onslaught continued. Jakob Gibbs tallied four quick points, and Sickafoose buried a triple in transition.
IWU's timeouts were not enough to slow Grace's 17-0 charge. Grace charged in front 68-57 by the end of its run.
The rest of the half was played evenly. IWU managed to trim Grace's lead down to four at 78-74 with 6:50 left on the clock.
But Grace countered with a triple from Cade Gibbs and an and-1 dunk from Scott. The Wildcats were not able to make another push as Grace's defense locked down the visitors.
IWU was muted to 30 points in the second half; they shot 38 percent from the floor and made only 1 of 9 (11 percent) from beyond the arc.
Grace finished the game shooting 59 percent overall, including a 13 of 26 performance from the 3-point line (50 percent).
Cade Gibbs amassed 24 points, 5 boards and 4 assists, Malone powered his way to 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks.
Jakob Gibbs had 17 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while drawing eight fouls.
Sickafoose and Scott were perfect shooting. Sickafoose made all four of his shots, including a trio of 3s, for his 12 points. Scott made all three of his shots during his outing of 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block.
Jake Wadding provided 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists, and Stoltzfus tallied five assists with four boards.
The Lancers will take a breather before their next game. Grace returns home on Dec. 2 for another Crossroads League doubleheader against Spring Arbor. The women will tip off at 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 3 p.m.
