Grace falters against No. 3 IWU

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team stumbled against the third ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats 120-56 on Tuesday night.

The Lancers (3-4, 0-2 Crossroads League) fell behind early to the red hot Wildcats, who shot an eye-popping 63 percent from the field in the first half. The deficit was too much for the home team as Grace was unable to claw their way back.

The Wildcats (6-1, 2-0 CL) jumped out to an 18-2 lead to start the game before a 3-point shot from Kaylee Patton momentarily stayed the momentum.

Grace finished the first quarter 3-14 from the field while IWU hit 14-21 to finish the quarter 31-10.

The Wildcats kept up their torrid shooting form in the second quarter to extend the lead. Peyton Murphy chipped in six points in the quarter, all from the charity stripe. Patton led Grace with 11 points in the half, but the Lancers trailed 59-27 at the break.

Grace started the third quarter with a steal and a layup at the other end, but IWU matched stride for stride throughout. Ryman added a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter to go along with two free throws and a steal.

Patton scored four straight points to open the fourth, but stingy defense from the visitors kept the offense at bay, as Wildcats put the finishing touches on the 120-56 victory.

Patton finished the game with 18 points on 7-10 shooting with three rebounds. Maddie Ryman scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Morganne Houk tallied eight points and three assists, while Murphy added eight points and nabbed a pair of steals.

"This was a disappointing result," Grace head coach Dan Davis commented. "IWU was relentless from the beginning and we just came out flat. I know that this squad has the capability to be a good team, we just have to dig down and find it and I know that we will."

The Lancers will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 2 for a home match against Spring Arbor at 1 p.m.
