WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team picked up a 92-71 victory over Cornerstone on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was played in front of a packed MOCC as students from local Warsaw elementary schools loaded the arena. Fueled by the near capacity crowd, the Lancers (5-7) played their most complete game of the season picking up a 21-point victory.
Grace's also set a season high in points in the contest, and had eight different players score.
The win gives Grace head coach
Dan Davis 100 victories in his career guiding the Lancers.
Cornerstone (5-5) grabbed the momentum early in the contest, rattling off the first five points of the game.
Grace got on the board with a layup from
Maddie Ryman which sparked a 15-2 run for the Lancers. During the run Grace went 6-7 from the field and forced the Golden Eagles into five turnovers.
The Lancers' momentum was momentarily stalled by a pair of Cornerstone free throws, but Grace quickly regained their form as they opened their lead to as many as 17 points.
Cornerstone closed the quarter with back-to-back 3-points shots as Grace carried a 28-17 lead in the quarter break.
Despite out shooting Grace 66 percent to 55 percent, Cornerstone trailed by 11 in large part due to 13 first quarter turnovers. The Lancers took full advantage, producing 16 points off the Golden Eagles miscues.
The Lancers' redhot shooting in the second quarter as they continued to pad their lead. A shot from beyond the ar from
Morganne Houk and a pair of shots from charity stripe saw the lead pushed to 20 points.
Cornerstone cut the lead down to 15 but Grace again had an answer and pushed the lead to its widest margin of the first half after a driving layup from
Bekah Marshall. At the halftime intermission Grace led 52-36.
After the first 20 minutes, the lancers were shooting 54 percent from the floor and 33 percent from beyond the arc. Grace held a 28-14 advantage on points scored in the paint and forced Cornerstone into 16 turnovers.
As the second half got underway it was all Cornerstone early. The Golden Eagles scored nine straight points to start the half which prompted an early timeout from Grace head coach
Dan Davis.
Houk scored following the Lancers' timeout, but the Golden Eagles continued to score at will and had cut the Grace lead down to five points by the midpoint of the quarter.
The ship was steadied for Grace after Ryman hit a free throw and
Molly Long hit a mid-range jump shot on the next possession.
Peyton Murphy then nabbed one of her six steals on the afternoon and Houk drilled a 3-point shot to push the Lancers' lead back to double digits.
Grace ended the quarter on a 10-0 run capped by a last second 3-point shot from Murphy.
Grace stayed true to form in the fourth quarter as they cruised to victory. The lead never dipped below 15 points and reached its final mark at 21 when
Kate Rulli rolled in a layup to give Grace the 92-71 win.
The Lancers finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor while Cornerstone shot a near matching 47 percent. Grace held an impressive 35-15 advantage on points off of turnovers and a 42-34 edge on points in the paint.
Ryman led Grace with 20 points and was closely followed by Houk who poured in 19 points of her own.
Murphy stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points,8 rebounds and 6 steals. Patton (16 points) and Marshall (11 Points) all crossed double digit scoring.
The Lancers will close out 2023 with a road matchup against Midway on December 30th at 1 p.m.
